The Revelation of Jesus Christ
G. H. Lang
Hard cover; 420 pgs.
In contrast to Govett’s view on Revelation, Lang holds that many of the visions in John’s Revelation have symbolic meaning. For example, he points to John 7:39 as the way to understand the River of water of Life in Revelation 22:1 as referring to the Spirit in type. Much however, is to be taken literally, including particularly the one thousand year reign of Christ with His Overcomers (20:6). With this in view he devotes much attention to the need for believers to be judged worthy by Christ in order to share in the millennial kingdom reward.
Lang combs through the several scenes of rapture in a fine way to show that the seeming contradictions of timing and place simply show that rapture is not a one time occurrence for all believers, but rather depends on our readiness to stand before Christ at His judgment seat. Some will require more trials to be purified if we haven’t cooperated willingly in today’s age of grace.
This befits the objective of the commentary, as written in Lang’s preface - “To emphasize the personal and moral lessons of Revelation so as to promote saintly living by the saints.”
