One of Robert Govett’s earliest writings, while still an Anglican Curate, this treatise already displayed his courage to tackle popular misconceptions of the afterlife. He shows that both the Old and New Testaments, including the words of Jesus, teach that when a person dies, his soul and spirit do not go to heaven or hell, but rather to an intermediate state “in the lower parts of the earth”, awaiting judgment.
