Govett on Baptism, by Robert Govett

Compiled from tracts and pamphlets. 432 pages, hardcover.

-According to Baptist News Global, “Christian baptismal statistics in the United States have long been on the downturn”.

This is true even among professing believers. Perhaps one reason for this is a lack of the full understanding of the significance – and yes, even the power – of baptism for the believer.

We recommend this book by Robert Govett for a very full view of baptism as revealed in the Bible. As he writes, it is much more than a ritual, it is a transfer from one person (Adam) to another (Christ), and it conveys by faith to the receiver the power to be separated from the world to live in God’s covenant.  The Christian “walk in newness of life” (Rom. 6:4) is the result of being planted with Christ in the water of baptism. More than a picture, it conveys to faith the reality of life and death in Christ (v. 5).

It is interesting to note that it was this matter of baptism which initially caused Robert Govett to leave his clergy position in the Church of England.
