The Apostle Paul prophesied that before the Lord’s return, the church would fall away (apostatize) from the truth (1 Tim. 4:1-5).

Robert Govett points out that the particular teachings and practices Paul warned of were characteristic of the Gnostic heresies affecting the early church. However he also examines these errors in the Spiritualism of his day (the late 1800s), all of which are eerily gaining adherents in the New Age movement of today.
